dethcaps – “Candied Peaches”

Back in December, alt/grunge group Dethcaps released their addictive new single “Candied Peaches,” which we’ve had on repeat since discovering it earlier this week. The San Francisco bay area-based trio, who met at a tattoo shop on Friday the 13th and have been best friends ever since, create music that, according to their bio, is “honest, genre-bending, and, most importantly, loud.” While their previously released singles “On the Run” and “Nightstand” are tracks that most definitely utilized this sort of volume, density, and texture, “Candied Peaches,” which merges bubblegrunge and psychedelia, goes in a slightly different direction in order to showcase their thoughtful sense of composition.

About “a lost love, heartbreak, and the whirlwind of emotions that follow,” “Candied Peaches” houses a fabulously intricate intensity made through a mix of earnest vocals, shoegaze instrumentals, and choice experimental effects including synth shards and spoken word verse. Vocal duties are shared, which adds to the track’s multidimensional nature; depending on who sings, there is an equal wealth of meaning to the sprawling poetic narrative, about a past love that still takes up residence in the psyche. The words mirror the all encompassing nature of the instrumentals: “You flood my senses / Leave me senseless / I’m left thinking of you.” There is a desire to move on, but something has left the persona crystallized, static; they remain in place, helplessly wondering: “Do you think of me? / Have I set you free? / Is your heart an empty void?”

“Candied Peaches” is out now.
