ghost orchard – “cursive”

Today, ghost orchard – also known as the solo project of Michigan-based artist Sam Hall – released his new album rainbow music. The weather today where I am (rain for an hour, sunshine for an hour) has been perfect for Hall’s brand of soft, yet slightly glitchy lo-fi bedroom pop; I’ve been sitting in the corner of a coffee shop since noon, cycling through the tracklist, and looking out the window. I keep returning to “cursive” – the bubbly guitar, the satin-like percussion, the earth-pounding beats that keep it all together – due to the aura of warmth and familiarity it evokes. Hall’s vocals, calm and resonant, never climb higher than a murmur, almost as if he’s singing to himself, attempting to work through a moment of rumination; the questions uttered throughout the narrative (“am I projecting onto someone or something?” he asks halfway through) give the track a wonderfully nomadic, wandering feeling (“will I walk like cursive?”) that ultimately makes it sound all the more human.

rainbow music is out now.
