orion sun – “Intro”

Today, orion sun – also known as the dream pop/R&B project of Tiffany Majette – released her stunning new EP Getaway. It’s the much anticipated follow-up to the Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter’s absolutely beautiful 2020 debut Hold Space For Me, an album that defied genre in its lush, enamored instrumentals and brilliant songwriting, all of which combined to express resilience and perseverance in the face of heartache, in all its variations. Getaway feels like a continuation of those ideas and feelings, the sentimental romanticism has been enhanced with earth-shattering synth beats and highly textured basslines, ultimately portraying “her own journey of self-discovery and healing.”

You can hear this immediately in the incredible “Intro,” the perfect opening track to Getaway. Majette’s vocals are crystal clear, shining above the gorgeously surreal, dream-like mix of violins and 70’s funk-inspired basslines. Every so often, the melody discernibly starts and stops, evoking the sudden halting of a beating heart, the catching of breath, the chance to reminisce and begin again. “There’s beauty in all of the small things,” Majette croons; “you crash and you burn until you live and you learn and you stay.” There’s immense comfort embedded in those lines, one heightened by the rich, ambered hue of the closing cello note.

I also wanted to include orion sun’s bio on bandcamp, where she explains the inspiration behind her music:

i used to ask my neighbor/friend around my grandmas way if i could borrow his ipod shuffle. i would listen to music i couldnt at home, it took me places i never thought existed. you are someplace else. completely out of your control. it almost feels like magic. and then its over. i want to create a small pocket in this infinite space to maybe rest in and explore before venturing on.

Getaway is out now.
