Alfie Templeman – “Forever Isn’t Long Enough”

Earlier this week, Alfie Templeman released the effervescent new single “Forever Isn’t Long Enough.” It’s the 17 year old singer and multi-instrumentalist’s first since his fantastic, brilliantly colorful EP Happiness in Liquid Form was released back in July, a stunning feat of production marked by dynamic guitar and memorable basslines, quirky, catchy lyrics, as well as an inexplicable charm that seems to course through everything like an electric current. The new single is no exception, bright and upbeat, complete with a hidden dose of reality lurking underneath the upbeat, groovy nature of the instrumentals – Templeman explained further in a press release on the nature of the track’s title:

Some days I can’t stop thinking about how short life is and how you only have so much time to spend with the ones you love. Deep, right? Honestly I’ve made so many songs with the titles “Forever Isn’t Long Enough” but this one felt the most meaningful. I’m still way too young to give anyone life advice, but this track to me is about how I’ve noticed that the further away you are from your memories, the closer they are to your heart.

Pronounced from the start, the guitar swirls and churns effortlessly underneath Templeman’s earnest vocals, creating an atmosphere that feels breathless, immediate. He explains in the chorus “I don’t want this wave to start/ ‘cause forever isn’t long enough,” and, adding his signature humor to it all, he immediately follows up with “it’s over now,” commenting on the fragile, fleeting nature of time – you really can’t escape it, not even in a (seemingly carefree) pop song.

“Forever Isn’t Long Enough” is out now via Chess Club Records.
