Muylike – “u were never really mine”

The first single from Netherlands based artist Muylike is absolutely everything you want in a dream pop track: euphoric falsetto vocals, a wistful, nostalgic narrative, and a bright, memorable guitar melody that’ll be stuck in your mind all weekend long. The fantastic “u were never really mine” is from Muylike’s upcoming debut EP of the same name, which he self-produced and self-recorded. Despite the sugary sweet lo-fi melodies, however, the track touches on the pain of letting go of a past love, something that Muylike’s Stjin explained in a statement:

“The song is about moving on from loving someone when you don’t really want to. When you know you’d still rather be with her. In the end you know that moving on is the only thing to do, because she was never really yours.”

The brisk, jaunty guitar and synth melodies steer the track into the pre-chorus, where the vocals grow more impassioned as he admits that although “there’s somebody new inside my bed/ I want you to know you were all I had.” He sadly realizes that though he “might start a little thing with someone else,” she “won’t really mind,” in fact, she might not even notice. But he repeats “I wanted you” until it dissolves within the bubbly guitar/synth mixture, reemerging one last time at the close as if a reminder to refrain from idealisms.

u were never really mine is out May 1. I’ve already had the chance to preview it and it’s lovely – a perfect accompaniment as we make our way into summer. Make sure you check out the last track when it’s officially released – trust me.
