Premiere: Dream Hermit, Mitosis EP

Today, Dream Hermit – also known as the musical project of 18 year old Connecticut-based artist Max Holsbeke – has officially released his EP Mitosis, a colorful, exuberant assortment of dream pop, shoegaze, and new wave all swirled into one pristine package. Holsbeke is the latest addition to Spirit Goth’s excellent net label BIRTHDIY, with Dream Hermit’s Mitosis only being their fifteenth addition to their already stunning lo-fi discography, including artists like Kalm Dog, Teen Blush, and Pastel Dream. Much like these artists, Dream Hermit proves the ultimate beauty in the feedback-tinged, blissfully raw and unrefined nature of lo-fi, subtly evoking within jagged synth a sense of vulnerability and nostalgia.

Mitosis shows Holsbeke’s skill in melding genres – in fact, “There Is A Place Out There” borders slightly on post-punk in it’s fluid vocals and complex orchestration, as well as it’s cathartic, passionate closing. “Boba,” true to its name, is bubbly and refreshing in its synth, while personal favorites “On A White Plane” and “Hopyard” are playful yet wistful, the lyrical narratives beautifully evoking the latter.

Dream Hermit:

“This EP was surprisingly the longest EP I’ve worked on. It takes songs from the course of five months. In the past I’ve written EPs over a month or two. The lyrics on this EP are also mostly more free spirited, without much prior thought, which I enjoyed for a change.”

Mitosis is out now via BIRTHDIY.
