St. Paul & The Broken Bones – “Call Me”

colorizeI found out about this band from a semi-secret show during SXSW this week and I’m so glad I did because they’re amazing. I saw them around 7:00 in the morning and I was amazed at the energy that the entire band had (especially since the rest of the audience and I were still partly asleep). Paul Janeway’s bold, electric, and gospel inspired vocals and the big band feel brought by trumpet and trombone players Alan Branstetter and Ben Griner meshed together so well, and it really blew my mind. He joked that he grew up with a loud family and that they would yell everything all the time, and that singing this way was the norm. He and grew up around religious gospel music and that influence really shows in St. Paul and the Broken Bones.  They have such a fiery stage presence, and you can see that in their videos and especially live. They played two songs during the show, “Call Me” and “Broken Bones and Pocket Change,” from their debut album Half the City, both of which were amazing.
