Bastille – “Icarus” (Song of the Week 2/13/2014)

220px-BadBloodBastillealbumBastille is slowly becoming a household name. Their hit single, “Pompeii” rose to the top of the charts in 2013 and still continues to remain there. However, most people have probably only heard of that song and that song only. The rest of the songs on their debut album, Bad Blood, are emotional and explosive. Dan Smith’s vocals are refined and the rest of the band know how to back him up. The song I chose for song of the week is called “Icarus.” I love any song with a title that comes from a greek and/ or roman myth, first of all, so I knew that this would be a good one. The myth of Daedalus and Icarus is one of my absolute favorites. . The ending of the story is not a happy one, but rather bittersweet. Icarus is so happy and excited to be flying like a bird, and rises higher and higher to the sun, fascinated by it’s brilliance. The sun melts the wax on Icarus’s wings, and he plummets into the ocean. Bastille does a pretty great job of incorporating this into a song that both references the myth and relates it back to real life, just as they did with “Pompeii.” “Icarus” was the first Bastille song I ever heard, and it will always be my favorite.
