Local Natives – “Black Balloons”

I love Local Natives. However, I didn’t at the start. Their music is a bit of an acquired taste. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor, released in 2010. The singer’s voices were different and a bit shrill, but in a really good way. I listened to “Sun Hands” so many times that I could sing every note and tap out every beat. That was my go-to song for a while. I even saw them live in concert last year! They didn’t play “Sun Hands,” but the rest of the songs are great as well. For fans of Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, and Foster the People, this one is a no-brainer.

I saw their new album, Hummingbird, sitting on the CD racks in Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago, and I thought, hey, why not. I listened to a sample of the first track titled “You and I” and I was instantly sold. Smooth piano and guitar tones house passionate lyrics and intricate vocal riffs. My favorite track off the new album is titled “Black Balloons.” The beat is addictive and it’s so fun to sing along to. The two main singers, Taylor Rice and Kelcey Ayer, compliment each other so well and it’s so nice to hear them together in any form.
